Eighth-place finalist Michael Johns came to the United States in 1998 on a college tennis scholarship. Now 29, he’d been signed to record deals with Maverick, Columbia and an indy label in the past.
“I had three record deals,” Johns said. “That’s why I felt so bad for Carly. She was getting so much grief over (having one).”
Going on “Idol” gave Johns “another chance at a career.” He’s got a new album in the works with distribution through a major label. Johns already has a song written by Diane Warren, who has penned countless hits, including “Because You Loved Me” for Celine Dion. And he’s been asked to consider songs by Linda Perry, John Shanks and Cliff Magness.“I mean, these are huge names in the business,” said Johns, who is often compared to late Doors frontman Jim Morrison and late INXS singer Michael Hutchence.
“I grew up in the grunge era,” Johns said. “When I was 14, 15, 16 — really getting into music — it was all Nirvana, all Pearl Jam, all Soundgarden for me. So it wasn’t until later on that I rediscovered INXS and The Doors and all the rest of it. I was a little bit backward. From the very moment I started performing in bands, people would say, ‘Man, you remind me of Michael Hutchence or Jim Morrison.’ I’m like, ‘I’m not trying to be that and blah, blah, blah.’ But you can’t help what your voice sounds like.”
Short review from Starexponent.com
Thank goodness for Michael Johns! He came onto the stage like he owned it singing “We Are the Champions” (Queen). He was quite comfortable in the spotlight — chatting with the audience, commenting how big the Verizon Center was — and yet it felt very intimate to him. His soulful rendition of “It’s All Wrong But It’s All Right” (Dolly Parton) had the ladies swooning. He said Randy Jackson didn’t care for his next number — “Dream On” by Aerosmith — but he was going to sing it anyway and it brought the house down. Michael appeared to be genuinely appreciative of the crowd’s response to his performance.
